Tribute to Julie Detalo

Mar 18, 2011 | Blog

Dear Family and Friends of Dr. Julie Detalo,

On behalf of the International Board of Education, Church of the Nazarene, I express profound sadness at the passing of my long-time friend, Dr. Julie.

I received the news of Julie’s death while attending the Africa Nazarene University Board of Trustees’ meeting. The Board chair interrupted the Board’s discussion, and we prayed for Julie’s family, friends, and Visayan Nazarene Bible College students and alumni of the institution. She so wonderfully led the college she loved.

The Church of the Nazarene has lost a giant! Her impact on theological education in the Philippines, far beyond the college she led, was profound. She severed as secretary of the Asia–Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary Board and on numerous other boards, commissions, and councils in the Philippines and Asia-Pacific Region. She served on the International Board of Education for four years, contributing significantly to the Board, and was loved by everyone with whom she worked.

From our days together as students at Nazarene Theological Seminary to the last time I spoke to Julie at the 2009 International Higher Education Council meeting in Orlando, she was a constant encourager. Who will ever forget her smile!

Our faith in a sovereign God will carry us through these days of grieving, not our emotions nor our understanding of her passing at this time. It is our convictional belief in the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the words of Scripture that we who by faith through grace will also be raised in God’s good time holds us steady. It reminds us that today is not the end. Our faith still holds!

I join Joel, many family members, and friends of Julie around the world in grieving. Our faith still holds, and we who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord of our lives, will one day be reunited with our loved one and friend.

Dear Julie, you will be missed, greatly missed. Until we meet again, we press on. Our faith still holds.

With gratitude to a sovereign God for the life of Julie Detalo,

E. LeBron Fairbanks
Education Commissioner
